The Southbury Public Library

Borrowing Materials
To borrow materials or use computers, it is necessary to present your valid hometown Library card. Southbury cards are available to residents 5 years old or older with proof of Southbury residency. Parents are responsible for their children’s choice of reading material. Non-residents may use their valid library card from their hometown. If you forget your library card, then proof of identification, i.e. driver’s license, will be accepted to borrow materials. Library cards expire every three years from the date of issue. To renew your card, bring it to either Circulation Desk. The charge to replace a lost card is $5.00.

At this time the Library can not accept smartphone apps in place of library cards at the Circulation Desk.

Placing a Book on Reserve
An item that that is checked out of the library may be reserved for you by using the PAC or asking a staff member to place a reserve for you. When the item is available, it will be held at the Main Circulation Desk. The library staff or volunteers will call patrons to notify them when "hold" books are available for pick up. The only items unavailable from or through the Southbury Library for reserves are DVDs and Videos. The item will be held in reserve for one week from the date the call is made. Please limit your reserves to five (5) at a time to help the staff to process your books in a timely fashion.

Email notification is also now available. Please ask a staff member about signing up if you are interested.

Inter-Library Loan
Through the interlibrary loan system we are able to obtain books we do not own. This system includes libraries in Connecticut as well as nationwide. There is a $5.00 charge for out of state requests.

Limitations
There is no limit to the number of books, compact disks, audio cassettes, talking books or magazines you may borrow. There is, however, a limit of four videos per household and they must be checked out on an adult's library card. Parents are responsible for their children's choices of reading material.

Finding a Book
Library books can be found by searching in the WebPAC catalog by author, title or subject.  Entries will indicate whether the book is in the Library and its call number.  This is true for children as well as adult books.  There are four PAC’s in the adult area and two in the children’s area.  Instructions for use are given on each screen.

The Library offers on-line services, which allow for direct access to your account. You can search the collection, renew books, place books on hold that are checked out at the time of your request and request from other libraries books not found in our collection.

Book Locations
New Books are located in bookcases near the Circulation Desk. Fiction and Mysteries are filed alphabetically by the author's last name just beyond the New Books. Large Print Books are located in the same area in front of adult fiction. Biographies are filed after the Fiction and Mysteries by the subject of the biography, followed by Nonfiction. Oversized (Q) books are behind the Nonfiction and Oversized Artbooks are located in the seating area in the center. Juvenile (J, JB or JP) and Teen Books are located upstairs in Youth Services.
