The Southbury Public Library

The Southbury Public Library was built in 1969 when community needs outgrew the long-used South Britain building. An addition was added to the Main Street building in 1979. The library is now located at 100 Poverty Rd in a new facility that completed construction on May 5, 2005.

Southbury is home to over 19,000 residents, inclusive of Heritage Village, a premier retirement community of over 2,500 units set on a beautiful golf course.  Our state of the art library serves nearly 550 people daily and is open 337 days a year.  Our Parks and Recreation Department provides sporting activities and events for all residents and our low mil rate of 21.5 creates a favorable business atmosphere.  Located mid way between Waterbury and Danbury on Interstate 84, the rural setting and commuting opportunities are unique.  Southbury has a diverse mixture of housing opportunities to satisfy all economic requirements.  Our school system is first class; our taxes are low, and our residents are neighborly.

As you drive through the streets of Southbury, or walk through the new streetscape of Main Street South, you are passing over ground that once was the hunting grounds of the early natives of our town, or possibly where revolutionary troops gathered in our quest for freedom, or where the blaring sound of the railroad locomotive whistle could be heard.  Your town has a long history, something that every resident needs to know.
