here\r\nUlysses S. Grant is one of the foremost figures in late 19th cent
ury American history but is also one of the most misunderstood. Although h
e served two terms as our 18th President, he is more well known today for
being the commanding general of the U.S. army during the Civil War. His li
fe and legacy have sometimes fallen victim to stereotypes, rumors, and sca
ndal. We take a look at this larger-than-life figure and try to learn more
about the man behind the myth. Who was Ulysses S. Grant and why are we st
ill so infatuated with him?\r\nMallory Howard is an accomplished, experien
ced public speaker and an expert on the life and work of Mark Twain and on
his Hartford, Connecticut home. She is also knowledgeable in American pre
sidential history as well as the social and cultural impact of the gilded
age. The topics of her presentations have included Mark Twain’s life in
Hartford; his original marginalia; the assassination of Abraham Lincoln; V
ictorian hygiene; Harry Houdini, and 19th-century spiritualism. She has le
ctured at universities, scholarly conferences, and even Mississippi riverb
oats! She is the assistant curator at The Mark Twain House & Museum.\r
