DESCRIPTION:The Ali Ryerson-Joe Carter Duo celebrates the music of Brazil 
 – Samba, Bossa Nova, Choro, Baiao and more, styles that are based on and
  a blend of African rhythms, indigenous rhythms and European folk and danc
 e rhythms. The duo’s repertoire features songs by Brazil’s classic com
 posers such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Moacir Santos, Jacob do Bandolim, Lui
 z Bonfa, Pixinguinha, Baden Powell, Ary Barroso and others.  Ali and Joe 
 take things a step further by using their Jazz backgrounds to add Jazz imp
 rovisation into the tunes, creating a sound that blends the best of both w
 orlds.  In other words:  the best of Music from “Both Sides of the Equ
 ator”.\r\nJoe Carter has recorded and performed with Jazz artists such A
 rt Farmer and Lee Konitz and with Brazilian artists such as Luiz Eca and M
 auricio Einhorn, and others. In addition, he has recorded several CDs thro
 ugh the years, his most recent is Both Sides of the Equator, with bassist 
 David Finck and percussionist Ze Mauricio.\r\nHaving performed in such div
 erse places as Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba and Recife in Brazil, Bombay, Bang
 alore and Goa in India, Trossingen and Stuttgart in Germany and Paris and 
 Corsica in France, Joe Carter has used these experiences to form a sound a
 nd style based in “Samba Jazz”, a style that combines the improvisatio
 nal nature of North American Jazz with the lyrical and rhythmical aspects 
 of Brazilian Bossa Nova, Samba, Choro, Baiao and MPB.\r\nWith a career spa
 nning nearly five decades, jazz flutist Ali Ryerson has consistently ranke
 d among the top flutists in the Downbeat Jazz Poll for well over a decade.
  Ryerson has released over two dozen albums, has performed in internationa
 l flute festivals, and has been invited to tour Japan.\r\nAli has recorded
  and/or performed with jazz greats such as Red Rodney, Roy Haynes, Kenny
  Barron, Frank Wess, Hubert Laws, Stephane Grappelli, Harold Danko, Art F
 armer, Mike Mainieri, Joe Beck, and Gene Bertoncini, as well as a recent 
 guest appearance with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orche
 stra. She has also performed with classical artists Julius Baker and Luci
 ano Pavarotti (when she was principal flutist with the Monterey Bay Orches
 tra). Ali was musical director of the Hudson River Regional Jazz Festival
  (2001-’04), Jazz Chair for the National Flute Association, and founder
  of the NFA Jazz Flute Big Band. As an educator and author, Ryerson pub
 lished the widely acclaimed Jazz Flute Practice Method, and conducts mas
 ter classes worldwide. Ryerson is a Gemeinhardt Artist with an Autograph S
 eries of flutes by Gemeinhardt Musical Instruments.\r\nLike all Southbury
