  here.\r\nA hike in the woods often reveals a variety of built stone cultu
 ral features. Many of these are the remains of abandoned farmsteads and in
 dustrial mill sites. Others, however, represent Native American ceremonial
  sites.Â \r\nJoin us as we explore the history ofÂ Southern New Englandâ€™
 s Indigenous Ceremonial Stone Landscapes (CSLs).Â They are often unrecogni
 zed as the significant cultural landscapes they are, in dire need of prote
 ction and preservation.\r\nThis PowerPoint presentation (and the recently 
 published book on which it is based) introduces people to Southern New Eng
 landâ€™s Indigenous Ceremonial Stone Landscapes (CSLs) â€“ sacred spaces w
 hose principal identifying characteristics are stacked stone structures th
 at cluster within specific physical landscapes. They are often unrecognize
 d as the significant cultural landscapes they are, in dire need of protect
 ion and preservation.\r\nLucianne Lavin is DirectorÂ EmeritaÂ of Research 
 and Collections at the Institute for American Indian Studies (a museum and
  research and educational center in Washington, Connecticut), a position s
 he held for 18 years. She has over 50 years of research and field experien
 ce in Northeastern archaeology and anthropology, including teaching, museu
 m exhibits and curatorial work, cultural resource management, editorial wo
 rk, and public relations.Â  Dr. Lavin is a founding member of Connecticutâ
 €™s Native American Heritage Advisory Council (a government agency whose a
 ppointed members advise the Office of State Archaeology and the State Hist
 oric Preservation Office on Native American burials and sacred sites), and
  retired editor of the journal of the Archaeological Society of Connecticu
 t, a position she held for 30 years.\r\nLike all Southbury Public Library 
 programs, this event is free to attend and open to anyone regardless of to
