Join us for this continuation of a series commemorating the 80th anniversary of the United States entering World War II.

Learn more about the military history of the United States between June and September 1942, just after the battle of Midway, June 1942.  Focus will be on the outset of the Guadalcanal campaign in the Solomon Islands.  Air reconnaissance noted the Japanese building an airfield on Guadalcanal and across the bay on Tulagi, a seaplane base.  To prevent the Japanese from cutting off the convoys from the United States to New Zealand and Australia, the 1st Marine Division will hit the beaches on Guadalcanal on August 7, 1942.  This first American offensive of the war will be fought on land, sea and air.  A fascinating look into an America gearing itself up for global conflict and launching an offensive.

Mark Albertson is the historical research editor for the Army Aviation magazine, and the historian for the Army Aviation Association of America. He has taught classes on military history at Norwalk Community College as well as the Lifetime Learners Institute. Albertson has authored several books on military history.
