Writing from the Senses
Emotions are the key to crafting compelling scenes and winning a readers' sympathy. But how do we access our characters' emotions without simply telling the reader how they feel? The sensory details that infuse our lives—the smell of a favorite meal, the texture of a loved one's skin, the sound of a gunshot, the taste of a crisp apple—these things add richness, nuance and believability to our writing. Skilled storytellers learn to capture, through sensory detail, the emotional nuances that drive our narratives and bring our characters to life. Through exercises, examples, writing and feedback in a supportive environment we'll learn how to enhance emotion and story with powerful sensory images and specific detail.
JACQUELINE SHEEHAN Ph.D. is a bestselling novelist. She also publishes essays in the New York Times (Modern Love), The Writer, and Edible Pioneer Valley. She has been a commentator on Public Radio. Her first novel, The Comet’s Tale, was based on the life of Sojourner Truth. The next two novels, Lost & Found and Now & Then, were New York Times bestsellers. These novels were followed by Picture This, The Center of the World, and The Tiger in the House. Her books have been translated into eight languages. Jacqueline edited Women Writing in Prison, a compilation from writing workshops with incarcerated women. She was a writing fellow at Hawthornden Castle in Scotland and Jentel Arts in Wyoming, and Turkey Land Cove on Martha’s Vineyard. Jacqueline is one of the founders and past president of Straw Dog Writers Guild. She teaches writing workshops in Massachusetts and at international retreats. She just completed her seventh novel.
