Friends of the Southbury Public Library Annual Scholarship

The Friends of the Southbury Public Library are awarding scholarship(s) up to $2,000! These scholarship(s) will be awarded to residents of the town of Southbury who are graduating high school seniors planning to continue their education in the 2026-2027 academic school year.

The Friends of the Southbury Public Library raise funds through direct donations, book sales, and membership fees to support the Southbury Public Library and its programs and to foster its relations with the Southbury Community.

There are four points of consideration: 

  • Involvement with library activities and library volunteering
  • Academics
  • Extracurricular Activities
  • Written Essay:
    • The mission of a library is to support information literacy along with community connection. Please write a one page essay in which you link your career aspirations or a personal experience to either of these goals.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Southbury Resident
  • 2026 Graduating High School Senior
  • Planning to continue your education in the 2026-2027 Academic Year

Get an application here or from the Reference Desk.  

In addition to the pages of the application, your application will also consist of an essay; transcripts are not required.

Applications are due by 4:00pm on Saturday, March 14, 2026. A hard copy of your application (including all three pages of the application and your essay) is due Saturday, March 14 at 4pm to the Reference Desk. Please note that public computers automatically shut down 30 minutes prior to the library closing.

A statement from the Friends about the scholarship: "Awarding these scholarships to college-bound Southbury residents is an investment in the future of our community. The Board of the Friends of the Southbury Public Library believes that encouraging the further education of our children benefits all of us. The Friends are able to award scholarships with financial support from membership dues and the proceeds of the annual and ongoing book sales." 2025 Friends Scholarship Recipients:

The Friends of the Southbury Public Library awarded $1,000 merit-based scholarships to each of four college-bound Southbury residents: Addison Batoon, Lila Kania, Zachary Rohwedder, and Shannon White.


2024 Friends Scholarship Recipients:

The Friends of the Southbury Public Library awarded four merit-based scholarships to college-bound seniors from Southbury for 2024. Trey Brattain and Kitan Arole were each awarded a $2,000 scholarship and Brody Bowser and Isabelle Pepe were each awarded a $1,000 scholarship.
